Cliché, I know, but it's on everyone's mind...end of year stress and summer desires.
Now it feels like we are on the home stretch, we can taste the pollen in the air, the warm summer breeze, the sand at our toes...but we have to wait about 3 more weeks.
We CAN do it :)
Everyone has to step away from the beach and the bars and realize how great it is to finish school with a bang, finish how you started, motivated, organized and with good grades.
Easier said than done, but as rising upper classmen we must look at this summer as the time to step up and get internships and real "big kid' jobs. The only way that is going to happen is with good grades and great references, aka your teachers and advisors. DON'T leave a bad taste in their mouth about you..
Not preaching because I am struggling to, I need to write this to motivate myself too, ha.
Summer is going to be great, I plan on interning with Wilma magazine (if i get it) and working somewhere....if anyone knows of a good paying summer job, preferably on Wrightsville beach (keep my commute short)
I wish everyone the best of luck on exams and all the final papers everyone is doing, and to all the seniors who are starting their real lives now.
Good luck everyone...keep pushing :)

Toms
I would like to believe that most everyone has heard of "Toms" shoes...but in the off chance you haven't you need to tune in...
Toms is an amazing company whose motto is "one for one" meaning, every pair of shoes you purchase Toms will give a pair to a child in need, one for one.
It originally started small but it grew very rapidly. And yes they are not some high end, last forever shoe, but that's not the idea. But I will say now that they have multiplied so much, they have about any style and color of shoe you can imagine, even boots!
They have a website that gives you more detail, and you can find them right here at UNCW in the eco store and around town, like Sweetwater Surf shop.
Well in lu of my discussion of Toms, I am letting everyone who doesn't know already what April 8th is.
April 8th is the day when Toms is asking all of the fortunate people in the world, to go a day, or even a minute without shoes. Walk around and see how it feels to be barefoot. It will help spread the awareness of Toms and the impact one pair of shoes can make for a child who is less fortunate.
In Wilmington they are doing a barefoot walk, on April 8th at 6 till 7pm around the Wrightsville Beach loop. Everyone needs to do, it would be a great representation of our community and how we want to help others.
They will meet in the park next to the basketball courts and begin the walk shoe less.
Ours is only for an hour, it's our choice to do it, and we know that we get to put shoes back on.... Not everyone can say that.
So take sometime out and look down at your feet, and be thankful!

Diary of a Wimpy Kid
So I am sure most people our age (20's and up) have not read or maybe even heard of this book. This book, Diary of a Wimpy kid, is amazing , it is sweeping the nation, being on the NY best sellers list and now even becoming a movie! I am currently reading it for a class but I love it...I can't put it down.
The bases of the book is about a boy named Greg who is a wimpy middle school-er who has decided that since he is going to be famous one day he should write in a journal so that one day it can be published. It is called "a novel with cartoons" and that is exactly what is, between the font that looks young and hand written to the cartoons that are drawn between days, a novel with cartoons is the perfect childish yet adult name it could be.
But in class we analyzing the book, breaking it down page by page and it so interesting. It is sad because everyone at one point in there middle school "career" they can relate to someone in this book. Greg tells what it's like to be "only the 52nd" coolest person out of the say 200 kids. All the struggles with being cool, having "cooties", getting braces, trying to talk to the opposite sex and so on, that everyone has faced.
It is so sad to think about to how harsh kids really are. The anxiety and stress these kids undergo to never seem uncool or emasculate is outrageous.
This book has made me remember some of the best and worst things about growing up and how much everyone has really changed. I think that it is important for everyone, no matter what age, should read "children" books as much as possible. It really helps with letting go and finding your youth again, the imagination we have lost and the knowledge we have gained really is put into perspective after reading these books.
We are still so young and it's important to remember that, "It's not that serious"
Everyone's been the wimpy kid,or the bully, or the kid with braces and so on.... don't ever forget your roots :)

True heartlessness
I am not sure if heartlessness is an actual word, but it is today in my blogger world.
I use the title "True heartlessness" due to it's ever so growing nature which of that is not called out enough, well I'm calling the heartless out today because I am sick of it.
As my last posted stated I had shoulder surgery last week, leaving me in a sling for the next 6 weeks...doesn't sound that bad right? But let's break this down...
My proposal to everyone for tomorrow is, try to do EVERYTHING one handed, with no help, almost none at all, from your other hand. (Make your dominate hand the one you can't use)
Things I never thought of that I/you cannot do...
1. Shower, you can put shampoo in your hand to put it in your hair.
2. Drive, it's illegal to drive with a sling
3. Write, I can only type but it's slower than most grandmothers, the constant peeking at keys is annoying.
4. Tie your shoes
5. Put your hair up
6. Zipper something up or twist a top
Just to name a few...but this not a pitty party for me, just an introduction to how heartless people are..
I can count on two hands everyday how many people let the door slam in my face, they see i am injured, i mean if i wasn't you would still think people have some common curiosity. What happened to chivalry?
Or how many people see I can't grab something or I am slow and they get mad and push me asaide....how rude.
Now I am someone who will get better and will have two arms soon, but imagine life really handicapped? Or all the Haitians, who will never recieve the medical help they deserve?
People are heartless, recognize the "small" blessing we all have in life and rethink the things we complain about, I know I have.

Surgery
You hear about people having surgery all the time. It's almost as common as breathing now a days. Especially cosmetic surgery, it seems like everyone has had something done. But what about when it's not cosmetic and it's you who has to have surgery. Well tomorrow I suppose I will know how that feels, because I have shoulder surgery tomorrow.
As of tomorrow, Friday February 22nd, I will be the 5th girl to have shoulder surgery in the past 3 1/2 years from the UNCW volleyball team. I feel like that speaks volumes. But why are so many of us getting surgery? We all have either torn a rotater cuff, torn labrums, or biceps tears. Or in my case, possibly all three tears. As well as missing cartilage that I will never get back. But why are such major reconstructive surgeries happening to such young athletes. Considering the average age of shoulder surgery is around 60 and male, neither categories we fit into. Kind of weird that my dad, who is 60 and obviously male, will be having the same surgery as his 20 year old daughter a week after my surgery, isn't it? Do we push young athletes too far? Are we destroying our bodies so when we are only in our 40's we will have arthritis and double hip replacement surgeries? These are all questions I sit and ponder as I think, tomorrow I will be another statistic.
It is easy to feel sympathy and empathy for people who are going to have surgery, but when it's you, the world looks a little different. I have always thought of myself as unstoppable, invincible to such injury because I am very in shape and have always been a 4 sport athlete, but I was wrong, very wrong.
Now I must sit and ponder what to expect, realize some of the simple things of getting dressed on my own will be taken from me, and to come to terms with the fact that I will be in a sling for a month! So take a second to realize how blessed you are at this very moment, look around, you have everything, you need nothing, you want everything, but you are blessed. I will miss my right arm for the next 5 long months, farewell good arm!ha :(
Surgery starts at 11:30 tomorrow, wish me luck.....
