So I am sure most people our age (20's and up) have not read or maybe even heard of this book. This book, Diary of a Wimpy kid, is amazing , it is sweeping the nation, being on the NY best sellers list and now even becoming a movie! I am currently reading it for a class but I love it...I can't put it down.
The bases of the book is about a boy named Greg who is a wimpy middle school-er who has decided that since he is going to be famous one day he should write in a journal so that one day it can be published. It is called "a novel with cartoons" and that is exactly what is, between the font that looks young and hand written to the cartoons that are drawn between days, a novel with cartoons is the perfect childish yet adult name it could be.
But in class we analyzing the book, breaking it down page by page and it so interesting. It is sad because everyone at one point in there middle school "career" they can relate to someone in this book. Greg tells what it's like to be "only the 52nd" coolest person out of the say 200 kids. All the struggles with being cool, having "cooties", getting braces, trying to talk to the opposite sex and so on, that everyone has faced.
It is so sad to think about to how harsh kids really are. The anxiety and stress these kids undergo to never seem uncool or emasculate is outrageous.
This book has made me remember some of the best and worst things about growing up and how much everyone has really changed. I think that it is important for everyone, no matter what age, should read "children" books as much as possible. It really helps with letting go and finding your youth again, the imagination we have lost and the knowledge we have gained really is put into perspective after reading these books.
We are still so young and it's important to remember that, "It's not that serious"
Everyone's been the wimpy kid,or the bully, or the kid with braces and so on.... don't ever forget your roots :)

Kimberly, I had to read that book for my Literature for Children class for Dr. Peel. That was the only book out of the seven we had to read that I could not put down. I loved the book so much that I read it in one day, then went to the store and bought the second book too. If you want the second book, I can give it to you since I have already read it. I was made fun of my some friends that I would be at work or at class reading this children's book with pictures.
ReplyDeleteI too, also love the stereotyping of middle school and the cooties, with the piece of cheese and inside jokes, and having one opinion of a fight that is wrong even if you don’t see it. I love the way that they use pictures to affiliate with what he is writing. There is actually a Children’s book called “Amelia’s Notebook that is designed in the same way except for a girls stand point. I have a couple of that series too if you wanted them to read of bring to your class for further discussion. I have no need for them anymore, I read them enough times. (haha) I wish I can find the third Wimpy Kid Diary so I do not have to spend money on since it will only take a day to read.
